I think one of the hardest things about going through any split, whether it be a divorce or a split from a relationship, is the feeling of losing yourself…your identity….sometimes even your purpose. We take on this sort of role and persona when we are with someone for so long and it’s who we are. We feel whole. We feel secure. We feel comfortable.

Then…for some of us…everything changes.

Sometimes this happens suddenly, without warning or seeing the signs. And in other instances, it happens slowly over time. Bit by bit, piece by piece, you start to lose yourself…your worth. The relationship starts slowly deteriorating and you realize its ending is inevitable.

I honestly don’t know which is worse….but however it unfolds, it can be devastating nonetheless.

So how do you pick up the pieces? How do you find yourself again, your purpose and your self-worth? One thing that will always be a necessary component of one’s healing journey is TIME. Time heals all things.

When I was going through my divorce, I read. A lot. Reading helped me. It helped heal me. It gave me a perspective I didn’t have and it allowed me to make sense of the things I needed to fix in ME. We often place blame on our partners for who’s at fault during a split but I will tell you this….love simply cannot thrive if we do not love ourselves. Read that again. We need to work on ourselves if we want our relationships with others to work.
